Meet Sergiu Margan

I’m Sergiu Margan, the owner and sole trader behind SB Margan Roofing. I work on roofs across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, and I still turn up to every single job myself. That’s not something you can say about many roofing companies.

I set up SB Margan Roofing because I got tired of seeing homeowners let down by contractors who sent inexperienced workers, charged for work that wasn’t needed, or simply didn’t show up when they said they would. I wanted to build something different — a roofing service where the person you speak to on the phone is the person who turns up on the day and does the work properly.

Over the years I’ve worked on everything from single-tile repairs on Victorian terraces in Harborne to full GRP flat roof installations on extensions in Quinton. Each job gets the same level of care and attention, whether it’s a small repair or a complete re-roof.

Formally Qualified & Manufacturer Certified

In an industry where anyone can call themselves a roofer, I’ve made it a point to hold formal credentials. I hold an NVQ Level 2 in Slating & Tiling Roofwork — a nationally recognised qualification that required formal assessment of both knowledge and practical skill. I’m also a certified Hambleside Danelaw Dryseal Approved Installer, which means I’ve been trained and assessed by the manufacturer to install their Dryseal GRP flat roofing system to exact specification. That certification is what allows me to offer customers a 20-year manufacturer warranty on Dryseal flat roofs — something most roofers in Birmingham simply cannot provide.

A Family Business, Run Properly

This is a small, family-run business and I intend to keep it that way. I don’t employ a sales team and I don’t cold-call homeowners. Every customer comes through word of mouth, a recommendation from a neighbour, or finds me online — and I’m proud of that. It tells me the quality of the work is speaking for itself.

When you call SB Margan Roofing, you speak to me. When I come out for a survey, I give you a straight assessment of what needs doing and what doesn’t. If a repair will do the job, I’ll tell you that rather than pushing for a full replacement. It’s the same approach I’d take if it was my own home.

The Thinking Behind the Work

Outside of roofing I am an independent researcher and published author. My work spans philosophy, systems theory, foundational physics and AI ethics — I have published over seventy papers in academic repositories including PhilArchive and PhilPapers, and a book through Wipf & Stock, an academic press. It is not something that comes up on a job, but it shapes how I approach problems.

A significant part of my research concerns structural coherence: what makes complex systems hold together, where failure modes originate, and how problems propagate through interdependent components. Every day at work I encounter those exact questions in a different material. A roof is a physical system, and working out why it has failed — what caused it, how far it has progressed, and what the correct intervention is — requires the same disciplined, systematic thinking. I would also say the reverse is true: working on structures with your hands, day after day, gives you an understanding of failure that no amount of desk-based analysis can fully replicate.

Whether any of that affects your choice of roofer is entirely your call. If you’re curious about the research side, it is at sergiumargan.com.

Why Local Matters

Birmingham is a city of varied housing stock — Victorian terraces in Harborne and Selly Oak, 1930s semis across Northfield and Quinton, post-war council-built properties, and modern new-builds in between. Each era of housing comes with its own roofing challenges, and knowing what to expect before you even get on the ladder matters.

I know the local suppliers, I know the common failure points on the houses around here, and I know what the weather does to Birmingham roofs over time. That local knowledge is something you simply don’t get from a national firm parachuting in a team from out of the area.

Most of my work is across Birmingham — from Quinton and Harborne in the south-west to Northfield, Selly Oak and beyond. I also cover Solihull, Shirley and Redditch, and out towards Bromsgrove and Droitwich. Typically I can offer a free survey visit within a day or two, and most jobs are booked in well within a week.

How We Work Differently

1

Every job photographed, images sent to you

When a roof is finished, I take photographs of the completed work and send them to you. This isn’t just for my records — it means you have evidence of exactly what was done, what it looks like close-up, and how it was left. Particularly useful for work carried out on sections of roof you can’t see from ground level.

2

Your quote price is your final price

Before I start any job, I give you a written quote. That figure is what you pay when the invoice arrives. If something unexpected comes up during the job, I tell you immediately and discuss it before proceeding — I don’t just add it to the bill at the end. I’ve never once charged a customer more than their agreed quote without their prior knowledge and approval.

3

I do the work myself

This is worth stating clearly: I don’t employ subcontractors. When you book SB Margan Roofing, you get Sergiu Margan on your roof. Not a labourer I’ve hired for the day, not a team I manage from the ground. Me, personally, doing the work.

Our Promise To You

Every job I take on gets done to the standard I’d expect on my own home. If anything isn’t right, I come back and sort it — no arguments, no excuses. That’s the commitment I make to every customer.

If you’d like to discuss your roofing project, call me on 07580 085 430 or use the contact form. I’m happy to talk through any concerns before we commit to a visit.
