Guttering & Fascia Specialists in Birmingham

Guttering and fascia work might not be the most glamorous part of a building, but it’s critically important. Your guttering system channels rainwater away from the building; when it fails, water runs down external walls causing damp, staining and long-term damage to brickwork and internal walls. Fascia boards protect the ends of your roof rafters and provide a fixing point for the gutters themselves — when they rot, the whole system can fail.

SB Margan Roofing carries out guttering and fascia work across Birmingham and the surrounding areas, from small repairs to complete replacements. We work primarily with UPVC systems, which are low maintenance, long-lasting and available in a wide range of colours and profiles to suit any property.

UPVC Guttering

Modern UPVC guttering is a significant improvement over the old cast iron systems found on older properties. It doesn’t rust, doesn’t need painting and requires minimal maintenance beyond keeping it clear of leaves and debris. We fit systems from Polypipe and other quality manufacturers using proper bracket spacing and falls to ensure water drains effectively to the downpipes.

We work with all standard profiles: half-round guttering (the most common profile on residential properties), square-line (a more contemporary look popular on modern homes and extensions) and ogee (a decorative profile that suits older and period properties). All profiles are available in white, black, anthracite grey and rosewood, and we’ll help you choose the best match for your home.

Fascias, Soffits and Bargeboards

Fascia boards are the horizontal boards that run along the eaves of your roof. On older properties these are typically timber, which can eventually rot, especially in exposed positions. UPVC fascia boards are the standard replacement option — they don’t rot, require no painting and give the roofline a clean, smart appearance.

Soffits are the boards that run horizontally beneath the fascia, closing off the gap between the fascia and the wall. They can be solid or vented (to allow air circulation into the roof space) and are fitted as part of a full roofline replacement. Bargeboards serve a similar purpose to fascias but run up the verge (sloping edges) of a gable-ended roof.

We fit fascias, soffits and bargeboards as a complete roofline package or individually where the existing boards are still sound. All work is properly sealed and finished to prevent water ingress behind the boards.

Signs Your Guttering Needs Attention

Half-Round vs Square Gutters

The choice between half-round and square (also called “square-line” or “deepflow”) guttering is partly aesthetic and partly practical. Half-round is the traditional profile seen on most residential properties and works well for standard roof areas. Square-line guttering has a larger capacity and suits properties with larger roof areas or steeper pitches where water flow is greater. We’ll recommend the appropriate profile based on your roof when we carry out a survey.

Colour Matching

Standard white guttering suits many properties, but we also stock black (popular on heritage-style homes and cottages), anthracite grey (a modern, contemporary look increasingly popular on extensions and new builds) and rosewood (an imitation wood grain effect that suits older properties). We’ll help you select a colour that complements your property and matches any existing UPVC windows or doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair just a section of gutter rather than replacing everything?

Yes — in many cases a repair is all that’s needed. We regularly replace individual sections, reseal joints, re-fix brackets and clear blockages. If your guttering is in otherwise good condition, we’ll tell you so and carry out only the necessary repairs.

How long do UPVC fascias and gutters last?

Good quality UPVC guttering and fascias will last 20–25 years in normal conditions. Unlike timber, they don’t rot and don’t need painting. They can become brittle in very cold weather over many years, but a well-installed UPVC roofline should give you decades of trouble-free service.

Do you remove and dispose of the old guttering?

Yes — we strip out and dispose of all old guttering, fascias and soffits as part of the job. We separate UPVC for recycling where possible. All waste is removed from site and disposed of responsibly.

Do I need scaffolding for guttering work?

For most standard two-storey properties we can work safely from ladders with standoff brackets for gutter work. For larger projects or three-storey properties, we may recommend scaffolding, and we can arrange this as part of the overall job.
